FG Sets Up Special Committee to Tackle Frequent Boat Mishaps

In a bid to curb the rising number of boat accidents across Nigeria’s waterways, the federal government has inaugurated a Special Committee on the Prevention of Boat Mishaps.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Abuja, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, emphasized the urgency of the task ahead.

“The challenge before us is significant, but with dedication, we can put an end to these tragedies and ensure that our waterways remain safe and navigable for future generations,” Oyetola stated.

The committee, chaired by Bola Oyebamiji, Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), comprises representatives from state governments, the Association of Boat Operators in Nigeria, marine safety experts, and academics.

Their mandate includes conducting a thorough review of commercial boat operations, identifying the root causes of frequent accidents, and recommending sustainable measures to improve safety.

Oyebamiji assured the minister that the committee would work diligently to enhance safety standards and operational efficiency.

The committee has six weeks to complete its findings and submit a comprehensive report with long-term recommendations to prevent further tragedies on Nigeria’s waterways.
