The Sokoto State Government, in collaboration with the leading health organizations, launched a public sensitisation campaign with the specific objective of sensitizing individuals on the control and prevention of meningitis.
At a one-day program held at Sokoto South Local Government Congregation Hall, Sokoto State’s Health Commissioner Dr. Faruku Umar Abubakar said that to date, 300 individuals had become victims of meningitis, while 16 received treatment.
He implored others also to take caution and hasten to hospitals when they experience any signs including high fever, vomiting, and stiffness of the neck.
Hosted by the State Ward Development Committee (WDC) in association with the State Ministry of Health and Primary Healthcare Development Agency, the meeting brought together government officials, health professionals, and community leaders to debate methods of countering the outbreak.
Sokoto state WDC chairman Comrade Bala Gadanga emphasized that the event was the first of its kind in Sokoto and was organized after experiencing a surge of meningitis infection in various local government areas. He emphasized how early diagnosis and treatment were required to avoid contraction of the illness.
On behalf of Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar, Gagi District Head, Sani Umar Jabbi, congratulated the government of Governor Ahmed Aliyu on its forward-looking initiatives towards strengthening public health and reiterated the support of the traditional institution for initiatives concerning health in the state.
