Nigeria’s Church of the Brethren, known as Ekklesiyar ‘Yan’Uwa A Nigeria (EYN), is calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and legislators to stand firm in protecting Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring that policy is for the greater good.
In a passionate appeal during the church’s Majalisa 2025 event, the EYN President called on the president to be resolute against executive overreach and to prioritize people-centered leadership. He also called on senators and representatives in the House of Representatives to bear the shared responsibility of maintaining democratic values.
The EYN President emphasized that all arms of government must respect press freedom as a key ingredient in any thriving democracy.
Speaking on the topic, “A Living Church in a Decaying World,” Dr. Daniel Dali, a former President of EYN, called on Christians to be a beacon of hope and moral light. National transformation is everyone’s duty, he said.
The General Secretary of the church, Rev. James Musa, informed the media that the yearly Majalisa provides the church community a forum to take stock of their faith, confront challenges, and celebrate successes as well as to chart the way forward.
Reading a goodwill message to the conclave on behalf of National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu, Ambassador Kevin Peters urged the church to work with government efforts aimed at entrenching peace and reconciliation.
Nigeria has been severely hurt by war. The church has a responsibility to guide healing, to call for forgiveness, and to help rebuild broken communities. Peace grows where forgiveness is planted, and revenge belongs to God,” Ribadu’s message stated.
