Musk Aide Resigns from Treasury Role After Racist Social Media Posts Surface

Elon Musk

A key figure in Elon Musk‘s government efficiency initiative has stepped down from his position at the Treasury Department following the discovery of disturbing racist posts on social media. Marko Elez, 25, who previously worked at Musk’s companies X and SpaceX, was part of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team tasked with reducing costs and identifying fraud within the Treasury.

Along with one other DOGE appointee, Elez had been granted access to a sensitive Treasury system that handles trillions of dollars in annual payments. The controversy erupted when The Wall Street Journal uncovered a series of racist posts from 2024 linked to Elez’s account on X, Musk’s social media platform.

The posts, which have since been deleted, contained deeply offensive content, including statements promoting ethnic discrimination and hate against specific communities. Among the troubling posts were declarations like “You could not pay me to marry outside of my ethnicity” and “Normalize Indian hate” from September 2024.

In July, the account brazenly stated, “Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool.” More recent posts from December advocated for repealing the Civil Rights Act and implementing “eugenic immigration policy.” The White House confirmed Elez’s resignation after the Journal brought these social media activities to light.
