Four Killed, Many Injured in Osun Community Clash Over Monarch’s Appointment

Police

At least four people have been killed, and many others injured following a violent clash in Esa-Oke, Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State, over the appointment of a new monarch for Ido-Ajegunle by the state government. Tension reportedly escalated after the Osun State government named Prince Timileyin Ajayi as the monarch of Ido-Ajegunle, a decision that angered residents of Esa-Oke, who claimed the appointment was made without the approval of the Owamiran of Esa-Oke.

Violence broke out on Monday when policemen allegedly stormed Esa-Oke, shooting sporadically to disperse protesting youths who opposed their presence in the community. In the ensuing confrontation, seven policemen were reportedly injured, according to the Osun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Yemisi Opalola.

Opalola confirmed that security personnel had been deployed to restore peace, assuring that normalcy would return to the troubled area soon.
