The Federal Government has affirmed that the state of emergency regulation on Rivers State will be withdrawn as soon as things are returned to normal in governance. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said this in an interview with The Nation newspaper, assuring that President Bola Tinubu is poised to restore democratic institutions in the state.
“As soon as he checks that sanity has been returned to Rivers State, he will restore all the democratic institutions of that state,” Idris stated.
He dismissed speculations of a political coup, insisting that the president had no secret agenda on the administration of the state.
“The president has no such plan to take over the running of Rivers State. He has no such plan to become or appoint a governor in Rivers State,” he added.
Idris explained that the state of emergency was imposed because governance had collapsed, which required immediate action.
“In a normal democracy, all three arms of government must collaborate to check and balance one another. That was not occurring in Rivers State, so the president had to intervene,” he said.
The minister guaranteed that President Tinubu does not aim to extend the emergency rule beyond what is essential, affirming that the move is in accord with constitutional provisions to restore stability and order in the state.
