Delta Health Commissioner Steps In as Nursing Student’s Query Is Withdrawn

Delta State Health Commissioner, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, has stepped in to resolve the storm surrounding a nursing student who was placed on query for allegedly refusing to refer to Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu, as “our mummy” when she visited the school.

The case gained traction after it was discovered that the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences, Agbor, had disciplined a student for sharing on social media a viral video of the case.

The said video was reported to have captured pupils refusing to call the First Lady “mummy.”

Shortly after it went viral, the management of the school identified the student who posted it—Nurse Osato Edobor—and issued her a query letter on March 27, 2025.

The letter accused her of violating school rules by taping and posting an “unauthorized” response to a song sung at Remi Tinubu’s welcome.

It cited the Student Handbook as grounds for discipline and demanded a written reply within 24 hours.

Reacting to outrage from the public, Dr. Onojaeme moved swiftly, directing the school’s provost to withdraw the query and ensuring that no student was unfairly disciplined.

“In respect of the question that was sent to the nursing student, I have requested the provost to withdraw the letter. We do not wish to victimize any student.

Secondly, we have spoken to the concerned student, and she has confirmed that the question has been withdrawn.”

The scandal fanned a fiery debate on social media, with the majority supporting the commissioner’s move while others decried the initial disciplinary action.

@Odimmadu2: “Nigerians still do not know the power they possess in the voice of solidarity when they raise their voices and demand accountability. One day, even Tinubu will abandon Abuja!”

@LordTyrion4: “Well said. Good job, good commissioner, for preventing what should not have happened in the first place. Social media ‘noise makers,’ thanks for keeping a watchful eye out for what is right.”

@OluwafemiO78855: “The world is changing in not-so-good ways. There is more emphasis on individual rights, which is better, but it’s sometimes to the detriment of discipline, respect, and people’s values.”

@wabiodun9: “That’s good! We must fight for our rights daily and keep democracy safe from Tinubu and his friends. This is not North Korea!”
