Spanish outlet Fichajes has reported that La Liga giants Atlético Madrid are considering Nigerian international Ademola Lookman as a potential replacement for Antoine Griezmann. Since joining Atalanta for €10 million in 2022, Lookman’s impressive form has fueled ongoing transfer speculation. The reigning African Player of the Year was linked with several top European clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, during the summer transfer window. Atalanta successfully retained their star forward, but he remains a hot prospect for European teams.
Atlético Madrid, the eleven-time Spanish La Liga champions, are the latest club to show interest. Manager Diego Simeone is reportedly on the lookout for a forward to replace Griezmann, whose contract at Wanda Metropolitano runs until the summer of 2026. However, rumors suggest Griezmann could move to Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States at the end of the 2024/2025 season.
According to Fichajes, Atlético’s management has begun scouting for Griezmann’s successor. The report highlights Lookman, Lautaro Martínez, and Alexander Isak as potential candidates, with Lookman considered the most accessible option due to his standout season, which includes 14 goals and seven assists. His contract with Atalanta ends in 2026, possibly making him more affordable than the other candidates.
Lookman is currently valued at €55 million by Transfermarkt, making him a relatively cheaper option compared to Isak and Martínez. However, Atalanta has reportedly set a €60 million price tag on the former Everton forward amid rising interest from European clubs. Replacing Griezmann will be a significant challenge for any player. The 33-year-old Frenchman has been a cornerstone of Simeone’s side for over a decade, contributing 196 goals and 90 assists in 423 games and helping Atlético become a dominant force in Spain and Europe.
