Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike received President Bola Tinubu’s unflinching dedication to the growth of higher education in the whole of Nigeria. Wike asserted that the Renewed Hope Agenda has rejuvenated Nigeria university system through unprecedented intervention that is transforming tertiary educational landscape.
Giving his speech at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) in commemoration of the 50th anniversary and the 37th convocation ceremony, during which he was awarded a Honorary Doctorate Degree in Law, enumerated key initiatives such as the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
He explained that the fund has provided priceless financial support to students to ensure that financial constraints do not hinder access to quality education.
Other key contributions of the President, which Wike mentioned in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, include the Students Start-up Innovation and Entrepreneurship Grant, with the aim of empowering youths to convert knowledge into successful businesses.
He further spoke about the universities’ defection from the Integrated Payroll Information System (IPPIS), which he averred has conferred financial autonomy and increased effectiveness on the operations of the institutions.
For Wike, “In addition, the domiciliation approval for TETFund Research Funds in institutions has further solidified our strength for advanced research and innovation.”
He testified that such innovative policies are preparing Nigeria’s university system to address the challenges of the 21st century.
During his thanksgiving speech to the UNICAL leadership for the honorary degree, Wike stated the award is not just an honor but a promise to stay committed to national development and to encourage future generations.
“By accepting this honorary doctorate with pride, I accept it with re-dedication to making even greater contributions towards education, good governance, and national development,” he stated.
I am really humbled and touched by this action. My name has been enrolled in the golden books of the University of Calabar, and I take this moment with greatest sense of responsibility, he continued.
