Tems Reflects on Surreal Rise to Fame After Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Drake Reach Out Within Days

In a recent interview with BigBoy TV, Nigerian Grammy award-winning singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, shared details of a pivotal moment in her career. The 29-year-old artist revealed that in 2020, within just three days, she was contacted by industry icons Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Drake.

Describing the experience as “surreal,” Tems explained how these unexpected messages came at a time when her career was taking off. Initially, she received communication from Beyoncé’s team, and soon afterward, direct messages from both Drake and Rihanna. The series of interactions left her in awe of how quickly her life was changing.

Tems rose to stardom in 2020 through her collaboration with fellow Nigerian artist Wizkid on the global hit “Essence.” The song’s success was instrumental in putting Afrobeats on the international stage, and Tems’ popularity soared. That same year, she released her debut EP, “For Broken Ears”, during the height of the pandemic, showcasing her unique sound and introspective lyrics.

Since then, Tems has continued to make waves internationally. In 2022, she collaborated with Rihanna on “Lift Me Up,” a soulful ballad for the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. Her contribution to Future’s 2022 hit “Wait for U,” featuring Drake, earned her a Grammy award, a landmark achievement in her career.

Most recently, on June 7, Tems released her highly anticipated debut album, “Born In The Wild”. The 18-track album includes collaborations with Nigerian Afrobeats star Asake and American rapper J. Cole. Tracks such as “Born In The Wild,” “Special Baby,” “Burning,” and “Wickedest” showcase her versatility and range, while other songs, like “Love Me Jeje” and “Me & U,” have already resonated with fans. Notably, “Love Me Jeje” was featured in former U.S. President Barack Obama’s summer playlist, further solidifying her influence.

Tems’ journey began with her self-produced single “Mr Rebel” in 2018, followed by the popular 2019 track “Try Me.” Her career trajectory has been remarkable, and her recent achievements continue to highlight her growing impact on global music culture.
