South Korean lawmakers voted on Saturday to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol following his controversial declaration of martial law, which was swiftly revoked. The impeachment, passed by a vote of 204 to 85, automatically suspends Yoon from office while the Constitutional Court determines his fate.
Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will serve as acting president during the Constitutional Court’s review, which could take up to 180 days. If the court upholds the impeachment, Yoon would become only the second president in South Korean history to be formally removed from office.
The impeachment motion, requiring a two-thirds majority, gained traction after a dozen members of Yoon’s own conservative People Power Party joined opposition lawmakers to pass the resolution.
Outside the National Assembly, jubilant cheers erupted among pro-impeachment protesters, who had gathered in large numbers to demand Yoon’s removal. The crowd, energized by the outcome, offered free coffee and food to participants in celebration of the decision.
