Retired Man Rescued After Wife, Sons Reportedly Tried Killing Him Over Pension Pay

An old man, retired in Oko-Filling, Araromi, Ijoko, Sango Ota, only managed to stay alive after being bound and dumped by his wife and sons allegedly for money meant for his pension benefits.

The incident, as reported by The Nations, occurred in the early hours of Thursday, March 13, at the man’s home.

He had apparently just collected his retirement package and invested part of it in establishing two shops for his wife in Abule.

He also gave her ₦3 million in cash. He purchased a ₦12 million car for himself, even though the family already owned a house in the area.

But his four university-educated sons and his wife were unhappy that he did not provide them the full amount.

They pressed him for money, and tensions within the family mounted.

Shortly after buying the car, the man sold it, which suspicious neighbors found hard to understand.

A local landlord revealed that suspicious neighbors took action after hearing unusual sounds coming from the house.

“He was bound like an animal ready for slaughter,” the landlord declared. “His wife and sons employed six men, who are suspected to be Aboki workers, to bind him.

The noise from their packing woke residents, who were drawn outside to discover what was going on.”

When they asked about the family from the neighbors, they received evasive answers.

Since they felt that something was off, they gained entry into the house and found the man tied at the hands, feet, and mouth.

The hired men were also around, seeming as if waiting for further instructions.

The victim was immediately untied from the ropes and hospitalized, where he is still undergoing treatment. His injuries, as reported, include swelling in his private area.

The police were called to the scene, and the suspects—hired men, children, and wife—were arrested.

One of the employees allegedly confessed that the wife had contracted them to restrain her husband.

Further investigation revealed that the wife had also been to the police station earlier and misled them into believing that her husband had tried to kill her.

She failed to return to the officers as she was asked, however. Instead, she is reported to have returned home and concocted the attack.

Emmanuel Omola, the chairman of Anjomo Community Development Association (CDA), confirmed the incident in an audio recording, urging residents to be more alert to intrusions into their neighborhood.

“If it was not for the timely action of the landlords, this man would have been murdered. When one hears unusual noises, one should go and find out. Quick response can save lives,” he said.
