Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Protests Against Trust Fund Pensions Over Alleged Unfair Labour Practices

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) recently staged a protest at the premises of Trust Fund Pensions in Abuja, expressing its disapproval of what it termed as unfair labour practices by the company. The NLC accused the firm of dismissing over 45 employees without following due process, thereby violating labour laws.

Comrade Chris Uyot, the Deputy General-Secretary in charge of organising and industrial relations, addressed the media during the protest. He outlined longstanding grievances concerning workers’ rights, management conduct, and anti-labour activities that have persisted over the years.

Despite the union’s attempts to engage with the management, Uyot stated that their concerns, particularly the recent dismissal of over 45 workers without due process, have remained unaddressed. This has sparked serious concerns within the NLC. The union argued that the laws of the country should apply equally to all, including Trust Fund Pension, and that any unjust actions need to be rectified.

Comrade Ismail Bello, another Deputy General Secretary of the NLC, echoed these sentiments during the protest. He criticised Trust Fund Pensions’ employment practices, stating that many workers, especially those at the junior level such as cleaners and security personnel, earn less than the minimum wage of N30,000. Bello also criticised the lack of dialogue between the management and the union, insisting that redundancy exercises should involve consultation with workers or their representatives.

Bello stated that the picketing action aimed to hold the firm accountable, adding that anyone associated with labour should respect basic standards. The NLC, in partnership with the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE), urged Trust Fund Pension to recognise the importance of fair labour practices and engage in meaningful dialogue, emphasising that injustice will not be tolerated.

Attempts to obtain comments from the management staff of Trust Fund Pensions were unsuccessful as no representatives were present during the protest.
