President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with national accolades, economic reward, and accommodation gifts for their fifth straight AfroBasket championship in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
At a special reception on Monday, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, awarded national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) to each member of the team, a $100,000 cash prize and a fully furnished apartment in Abuja free of charge.
Speaking to the team, VP Shettima praised the team’s strength in solidarity and resolve, asserting, “This victory shows what we can do when we unite. Nigerian women have never disappointed this country in athletics, and D’Tigress has once again left us proud.”.
D’Tigress claimed their latest triumph with a convincing 78–64 defeat of Mali under the direction of Coach Rena Wakama, who was the first female to lead the team to AfroBasket victory in 2023.
The win cements D’Tigress’s dominance on the continent with five consecutive titles 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, and now 2025 the longest consecutive win streak in African women’s basketball history.
This move by President Tinubu is an echo of the recognition recently accorded to the Super Falcons following their 2024 WAFCON success, pointing towards a continued commitment to commemorating the success of women players on the international stage.
