The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed a fine of N3 million on Ikorodu City for a security breach during their home match against Remo Stars at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, which ended in a 1-1 draw last weekend.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Davidson Owumi, the league body ruled that the Lagos-based club violated Rule B13.52 of its Frameworks and Rules by failing to provide adequate and effective security. This breach led to unauthorized persons gaining access to restricted areas and the assault of Remo Stars Coach, Mr. Sulaimon Kamil.
Additionally, the NPFL noted that Ikorodu City breached Rule B13.18 by allowing unauthorized persons to encroach onto the field of play. The club was also found guilty of violating Rule C9, which mandates proper conduct of teams and supporters, leading to the attack on the Remo Stars coach.
As a result, Ikorodu City has been fined N1 million each for the following infractions:
- Failure to provide adequate security.
- Unauthorized encroachment onto the field of play.
- Failure to control the conduct of its team and supporters.
The NPFL also ordered Ikorodu City to play their next two home matches behind closed doors and directed the club to identify and prosecute those responsible for the assault on Mr. Kamil.
The statement further warned that the fines must be paid within seven working days. Clubs that appeal the decision or request a disciplinary review risk additional sanctions if their appeal is deemed frivolous, as per Rule E1 of the NPFL Frameworks and Rules.
