The Edo State Police Command has apprehended a 55-year-old man, Osaro Ahuwa, for allegedly setting his estranged wife’s house ablaze in Benin City. The incident occurred in the early hours of New Year’s Day, just a day after the victim, Uyi Tina, an Italy-based businesswoman, returned to Nigeria.

According to reports, Osaro went to Tina’s residence on Asemota Street, Idunowinna Quarters, seeking entry. However, Tina refused, citing the end of their relationship and the return of her bride price in April 2024. An eyewitness stated that Osaro, angered by her refusal, smashed the windows, poured petrol around the apartment, and ignited the fire using a lighter.

In a statement on January 2, 2025, the police spokesperson, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, confirmed Osaro’s arrest along with his accomplice, Odaro Oviarobo, who is allegedly the victim’s brother.

“On 01/01/2025, the Command received a distress call from one Osariten Terecy, reporting that at about 1:30 am, her sister, Uyi Tina, was asleep when her estranged husband, Osaro Ahuwa, arrived at her residence with a keg of fuel and set the house ablaze,” the statement read.

Fortunately, Tina managed to escape but sustained burns. However, the fire completely destroyed the house, including all belongings, £4,000 in cash, and her Lexus RX 330. The police have assured that both suspects are in custody, and an investigation is underway.
