Amidst the ongoing war of words between Raye and the Nigerian government, lawyer Stan Alieke, who had a working relationship with Speed Darlington in the past, has entered the fray. He warned against publicly blasting the government while serving in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
On an Instagram post, Alieke explained that corps members are government employees and, as employees, are under employment laws that restrict them from making critical remarks against their employer, the government.
“A member of the corps is a government official; you’re paid stipends by the government.
So, as a matter of employment policy, you are not supposed to say certain things about your employer.
This is not with the government alone; it’s also the same with most private institutions.
You don’t criticize your employer in public. Otherwise, you get disciplined or even fired,” he clarified.
Though acknowledging that the legality of such bans is in doubt, Alieke underscored that “rules are rules, and once you sign up, you need to abide by them.”
The lawyer cautioned Raye not to let social media entice her into making decisions that will have long-term consequences.
“My humble advice to the NYSC lady is that she should understand this fact and not be deceived by social media sentiment.
People will hype you for fame, chant you to your death, and then forget about you.”
He further said that getting disqualified from NYSC would impact her future professional lives in Nigeria much because many organizations require an NYSC certificate.
“If NYSC releases you, your chances of obtaining some jobs in Nigeria are limited because some organizations do not take you in without an NYSC certificate. For easier understanding, she should consult her NYSC handbook.”
Raye, a serving corps member, went viral after she posted a video where she insulted President Bola Tinubu’s government for the rising cost of living.
Her words led to threats of disciplinary action against her by NYSC officials, which set off a raging debate about free speech and restrictions on corps members.
