The Federal Government has announced plans to rename the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) after Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd).
The decision was disclosed on Monday, December 15, by the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to Idris, the renaming of the university is part of efforts to honour General Gowon, who recently marked his 90th birthday.
The proposal to effect the change will be forwarded to the National Assembly for formal legislative approval.
General Yakubu Gowon served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1966 to 1975 and is widely recognized for his contributions to national unity during and after the Nigerian Civil War.
