In response to the ongoing fuel crisis across Nigeria, Vice President Kashim Shettima has convened an urgent meeting with Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of State for Petroleum, and Mele Kyari, CEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), to find immediate solutions. The meeting, called on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, who is currently on an official visit to China, also included Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser.
Lokpobiri assured Nigerians that fuel supplies would soon stabilize, urging calm amid rising fuel prices. He emphasized that the government does not set fuel prices, as the sector is deregulated, and predicted that increased availability would lead to price stabilization.
Meanwhile, the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives condemned the recent fuel price hikes, calling them ill-timed and insensitive to Nigeria’s harsh economic conditions. Led by Hon. Kingsley Chinda, the caucus demanded an immediate reversal of the price increase, warning that it would worsen inflation, unemployment, and poverty.
Amid these developments, commuters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are grappling with skyrocketing transportation costs, with fares nearly doubling in some areas due to the removal of fuel subsidies. Residents in Nyanya, Gwagwalada, and Lugbe have been particularly affected, with bus and taxi fares increasing significantly, leaving many struggling to manage their daily expenses.
Transport operators have also been impacted, forced to raise fares to cope with the soaring fuel prices. The situation has left both commuters and drivers seeking relief as they navigate the economic hardships.
