The Federal Government of Nigeria has mandated that individuals under the age of 18 will no longer be eligible to participate in the National Examinations Council (NECO) and West African Examinations Council (WAEC) examinations.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, during an appearance on Channels Television’s ‘Sunday Politics’ program. He emphasized that WAEC, which conducts the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), and NECO, which organizes the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), have been instructed to enforce this age limit directive.
Prof. Mamman reiterated that the minimum age requirement of 18 years also applies to candidates writing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). He clarified that while the policy is not new, it serves as a reminder to ensure that candidates meet the required age for these exams.
“For the avoidance of doubt, this is not a new policy; it has been in place for a long time,” the Minister stated, noting that the average age for a student completing secondary education aligns with the 18-year requirement. Moving forward, NECO and WAEC will strictly enforce this policy, disallowing underage students from sitting for their examinations.
