Space X and Tesla founder Elon Musk has called reports that he will leave his government position in the next few months “fake news.” A senior White House official previously told NBC News, Sky’s US partner network, that Donald Trump had discussed the possibility of Tesla and X chief returning to the private sector at a cabinet meeting last month.
Politico further said that Musk, who is serving as an adviser and a “special government employee” in the administration of President Donald Trump, will be returning to the world of business due to his disputed policies and drop in Tesla stocks. After reports of the meeting, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called it “garbage” and went on to say: “Elon Musk and President Trump have both made public that Elon will quit public service as a special government employee once he finishes his terrific work at DOGE.”
Mr Musk responded in comment on X: “Yeah, fake news.” NBC News reported the official as stating that Mr Musk would leave by the end of his 130-day stint as a special government employee. That is 30 May, but whether or not billionaire tycoon Mr Musk will actually leave by then remains to be seen.
Earlier, the White House had indicated that, as a temporary agency, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) would be disbanded on 4 July next year – the 250th anniversary of the US. This comes days after Mr Musk revealed that his DOGE members were being threatened with death daily.
Mr Musk had come under fire for plans to cut the US federal government to size.
Within weeks, entire agencies were abolished, and tens of thousands of federal workers of the 2.3 million strong federal workforce have been fired or have resigned voluntarily. There were numerous lawsuits filed in federal and state courts against cuts proposed by DOGE.
