Cyber Criminals Take Over Ghanaian President John Mahama’s X Account for 48 Hours

Ghanaian President John Mahama’s official X account was taken over by cybercriminals for 48 hours, and they utilized it to promote a fake cryptocurrency project.

The hacking began on Saturday, March 15, 2025, and the hackers tweeted about Solanafrica, falsely claiming that Mahama was leading the project to facilitate free payments across Africa through the Solana blockchain.

The scam was exposed on Sunday following public interest in the suspicious messages.

However, despite the removal of some of the scam material, the account continued to post cryptocurrency-themed messages, including teasers for an upcoming memecoin drop.

Mahama‘s spokesperson, Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed the hacking incident in a statement on Tuesday, March 18, 2025:

The President’s X account was compromised, and we’ve worked to secure the account.

The account has now been fully restored, and we’re requesting the public to disregard any suspicious cryptocurrency-related tweets from the handle.”

The incident prompted reaction from social media users, and many questioned the security measures in place:

@LinusMacks: “Whoever runs the account must up his game… We can’t allow this to happen! How????

@tussey7: “Don’t use Android and Windows PCs. They’re extremely vulnerable. Take this seriously. Get an iPhone—it’s more secure.”

@eagleyez7: “The account must have a grey badge, not blue.”

@JP_Lawson: “Mr. President, sir, get a grey checkmark.”.
