APC Downplays Obasanjo, Kwankwaso, and Duke Meeting Amid Political Speculations

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed growing speculation about the recent meeting between Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke, and ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The private meeting reportedly centered on Nigeria’s political future, sparking talk of potential realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This development follows remarks by Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, who publicly endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, asserting that there would be “no vacancy in Aso Rock until 2031.”

Kwankwaso, Duke, and their associates paid a courtesy visit to Obasanjo, a known critic of Tinubu’s administration, to deliberate on “significant national issues.”

After the meeting, Kwankwaso took to Facebook to share his thoughts, describing the visit as insightful.

“I was pleased to be in the company of my friend, His Excellency Donald Duke, and other associates to pay a courtesy call on former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his residence in Abeokuta.

Deliberations on significant national issues, including the future of politics and governance in Nigeria, defined the conversation,” he wrote.

However, the APC has downplayed the meeting, dismissing it as inconsequential to the ruling party.

Bala Ibrahim, the APC’s National Publicity Director, said Tinubu’s leadership stands unrivaled, despite the trio’s discussions.

“With due respect, I hold Obasanjo in high esteem. As a former President, ex-Head of State, and elder statesman, I don’t want to take issues with him.

But when it comes to the politics of Nigeria, particularly contemporary politics, Tinubu is not their mate,” Ibrahim stated.

He went on to argue that Tinubu’s political influence surpasses that of Obasanjo, Kwankwaso, and Duke. “Tinubu is head and shoulders above them in modern Nigerian politics.

So the combination of Obasanjo, Kwankwaso, Peter Obi, and Donald Duke does not present a threat to Tinubu. These are people who were defeated in the last election,” he said.

Ibrahim also criticized Obasanjo’s history of endorsing losing candidates, citing his support for former President Goodluck Jonathan, who lost to Muhammadu Buhari, and for Peter Obi in the 2023 election, where Tinubu emerged victorious.

“They can hold marathon meetings until the end of time, but they pose no threat to the APC government.

If they are bringing angels, that’s a different story. But these same spent forces coming together won’t achieve anything,” he concluded.
