AMVCA 2025: People Are Complaining About How Funke Akindele Was Omitted In The Nominations

The newly released nominations for the 2025 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs) has been met with controversy on various social media websites, with questions as to why top actress and box office monarch Funke Akindele was omitted.

Released on Sunday, March 23, the list of nominations included some highly acclaimed productions such as Seven Doors by Femi Adebayo and Lisabi by Lateef Adedimeji, who all got multiple nominations.

What raised eyebrows among fans, though, was Akindele missing out on the individual nomination list despite featuring in House of Gaa, which actually got a nod.

Adding fuel to speculation was her 2024 blockbuster Everybody Loves Jenifa, which was left out totally.

It is not the first time that Akindele’s AMVCA award has been questioned.

During the 10th annual awards, her film A Tribe Called Judah received numerous nominations—like Best Makeup, Best Writing in a Movie, Best Lead Actress, Best Movie, and Best Supporting Actor—but did not receive any award, to the dismay of fans.

Despite this, Akindele is the most decorated star in AMVCA history and the highest nominee for acting and direction.

She has won six AMVCA awards, including multiple Best Actress in a Comedy (2016, 2017, 2020, and 2022) awards among others, as well as Best Actress in a Drama and Best Director.

Social media followers responded:

  • @darejoyc: “You are not a fan but an enemy. You will be put to shame soon. Funke Akindele won the Silverbird Award last year and decided not to submit her movie for AMVCA, so what’s the fuss about?”
  • @AyomideIrish: “Scrap this attitude; everyone in the industry deserves to be celebrated. Funke Akindele has already been honored with the AMVCA award. Let others shine too.
  • We love Jenifa, so we love other celebrities. And besides, Funke is more than the Trailblazer Award. Congrats to the nominees.”
  • @asquareofcourse: “Funke Akindele and Toyin did not submit movies for AMVCA? #AMVCA11.”
  • @Happinessajayi5: “Are we still going to be having a Funke Akindele vs AMVCA debate this year? Any little thing, ‘they snubbed her, they snubbed her.’ Nawa o.”
  • @Somtochukwu137: “Funke Akindele and AMVCA fight? #AMVCA11 Aholu of Lagos.”
  • @Khaleepharr: “Funke Akindele not getting an AMVCA nomination? Unbelievable.”
  • @emmanuelakande0: “Funke Akindele did not submit Everybody Loves Jenifa for nominations. #AMVCA11 #AMVCA.”
  • @The_BoluTife: “You people should create a special award category for Funke Akindele or elseeeee.”

While most speculated that Akindele consciously avoided sending her work for consideration, others opine that she should be continually recognized for her efforts in Nollywood.
