Nollywood actress Funke Akindele has spilled a very tear-jerking account of one of the darkest moments in her life, exposing how she almost lost herself after the death of her mother in 2023.
In a charged up interview session with media presenter Chude Jideonwo, the actress/producer candidly confronted the choking weight of bereavement, collapse of her union, defeat in the Lagos State governorship election, and exhausting stress of being under the spotlight.
“I do not like to mourn,” she admitted. “When my mother passed away, I just wanted to get away from it as quickly as possible. I do not allow myself to fall apart, but that choice haunted me later—and I almost died.”
Akindele insisted that she had held in her emotions in an effort to stay tough and keep working, but the repressed sorrow eventually took its toll on her mental and physical health.
It all came to a head when she was pulled online for an accusation that she insists was completely unfounded.
“For the first time, I picked up my phone and went live. I said, ‘Leave me alone! Do I know this guy? No. The guy came to work on my film, got paid, and left. Why am I being blamed for something I didn’t do?'”
“Do you know what I’m going through?” she continued. “I’ve lost my mum, my marriage collapsed, I lost at politics, I have to go back to work, I have to earn money. I’m bringing up my children by myself—and you’re worrying me.”
The actress said that scene triggered a meltdown she could no longer hide. “For the first time, I cried. I broke up for weeks.”.
