According to a recently published report by the World Health Organization (WHO), Nigeria accounted for more than fifty percent of all malaria-related fatalities worldwide in 2021.
According to a March 29 report, Nigeria is responsible for 31.3 percent of such fatalities. The other three countries accompanying Nigeria are the Democratic Republic of the Congo (12.6%), Tanzania (4.1%), and Niger (3.9%).
The report also disclosed that 247 million cases were reported in the same year, a two million increase from the previous record set in 2020.
It was estimated that 95 percent of all malaria cases and 96 percent of all malaria fatalities occurred in Africa.
During the same time period, approximately 80 percent of all malaria fatalities in the region occurred in children under the age of five.
Since 2015, the WHO has only certified nine countries as malaria-free. Maldives, Sri Lanka, Kyrgyzstan, Paraguay, Uzbekistan, Argentina, Algeria, China, and El Salvador are the countries in question.
