Dr. Chinedu, a native of Nteje in Oyi Local Government Area, was reportedly trailed by the assailants and attacked near the High Tension area around 8:00 p.m. According to eyewitnesses, the lecturer was driving his Toyota Corolla when another Toyota Corolla, occupied by the gunmen, blocked his path.
An eyewitness recounted that when Dr. Chinedu stepped out of his vehicle to question the obstruction, one of the assailants drew a gun and shot him twice in the head.
“After they shot him, the man fell to the ground, and blood started gushing from his head. The attackers then got into his car, ran it over his body, and fled with the vehicle,” the source narrated.
The scene attracted some passersby who informed the lecturer’s family. However, while arrangements were being made to move his remains, a team of policemen from the Central Police Station (CPS), Awka, arrived and insisted on taking custody of the body.
The murder has plunged the UNIZIK community into deep sorrow. The university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Louis Njelita, confirmed receiving the news but said he had no further details at the time. He added that the university’s Chief Security Officer (CSO) was seen heading to the office of the acting Vice-Chancellor.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation into the gruesome killing. In a statement, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, appealed to eyewitnesses, the university management, and the public to provide any information that could help apprehend the perpetrators.
