Ukraine Thwarts Russian Drone Attacks, Targets Major Oil Refinery

The Ukrainian military has announced it intercepted 50 of 72 drones launched by Russia overnight while launching its own counterattack on one of Russia’s largest oil refineries. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy revealed the scale of Russian attacks on Ukraine in the past week, citing over 1,250 aerial bombs, 750 attack drones, and more than 20 missiles used to target Ukrainian territory.

“Only determination can stop such terrorists,” Zelenskiy said. “We are constantly working with our partners to strengthen our defense capabilities and reduce Russia’s ability to terrorize Ukraine.

Long-range capabilities, sanctions, and lowering the price of oil are crucial. The key is to act in unity and protect lives with resolve.”

In a counterstrike, Ukraine’s general staff reported hitting the Ryazan oil refinery, one of Russia’s four largest refineries, with explosions and fires confirmed at the site. Ukrainian authorities did not immediately report casualties or damage from the attack.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed its air defense systems destroyed 15 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory and two sea drones in the Black Sea. It stated that eight drones were downed in the Ryazan region, six in Kursk, and one in Belgorod overnight. Ryazan Governor Pavel Malkov confirmed there were no casualties from the drone attacks but noted that damage assessments were still underway.
