At least two people have been killed, and several others injured in a violent communal clash between the Owake and Ebo communities in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State. The conflict, which erupted over a land dispute, has also resulted in widespread destruction of properties, including homes and community structures.

The violence escalated on Sunday night when suspected hoodlums from Ebo allegedly attacked the Oka-Odo area. Among the properties destroyed were the palace of the Asin of Oka-Odo, a nearby event hall, and the home of Mr. Omorinbola Francis, popularly known as Ekoro, which was completely razed. Injured victims have been admitted to the Federal Medical Centre in Iwaro-Oka.

Sources revealed that the clash was triggered after Owake community members installed signposts along Ikun Road, following an Appeal Court ruling affirming their ownership of the disputed land. On their return, they were reportedly ambushed by suspected thugs, sparking a retaliatory attack by Oka-Odo youths on Ebo, which led to further violence and arson.

Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, confirmed the incident, noting that it initially began on January 12, 2025, during a hunting expedition by Oka-Odo youths, who were allegedly mistaken for Owake community members by Ebo youths.

The police, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP Ops), have been deployed to restore peace and prevent further escalation. The Commissioner of Police called for calm and urged both communities to resolve their disputes peacefully. He also assured residents that those responsible for the violence would face justice.
