JD Vance, Donald Trump‘s running mate for the upcoming U.S. election, shared details of a phone call with the former president just minutes after Secret Service agents thwarted a second assassination attempt on Trump at his West Palm Beach golf course.
Vance, speaking at a Faith and Freedom Coalition event in Georgia, described receiving the call from Trump while at home in Cincinnati with his children. The former president informed him of the terrifying incident that unfolded when agents spotted the barrel of an AK-47-style rifle aimed toward Trump during his round of golf.
Vance recounted his disbelief during the conversation, initially thinking Trump was joking, but soon learned that a gunman, identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh from Hawaii, had attempted to kill the former president. According to Trump, the Secret Service intervened after spotting the gunman near the course’s chainlink fence.
Although Routh never fired his weapon, agents opened fire, prompting him to flee. Routh was arrested after a high-speed chase along I-95 and now faces federal gun charges, with additional charges possible as the investigation progresses.
This was the second attempt on Trump’s life in three months. The first incident in July saw a bullet graze Trump’s ear during a campaign event, with the assailant shot dead on the scene by security. Despite the gravity of these events, Trump maintained his humor, expressing frustration to Vance over not being able to complete a birdie putt during the latest attack.
