US President Donald Trump revoked Secret Service protection for Hunter Biden and Ashley Biden, which was extended by Joe Biden before leaving office in January.
Trump announced this on Truth Social after being asked about Hunter Biden’s security detail.
Hunter Biden has been getting Secret Service protection for years, all at the cost of the United States taxpayer,” Trump tweeted.
“Effective immediately, Hunter Biden is no longer receiving Secret Service protection. Likewise, Ashley Biden, who has 13 agents, is being taken off the list.”
The office of Joe Biden has not reacted to the move yet.
Under the federal law, former presidents and their spouses receive lifetime Secret Service protection, while their children above the age of 16 lose protection once they vacate office.
Trump and Biden had, however, extended their children’s protection by six months after their presidencies.
Trump’s move is not unprecedented. Earlier in his second term, he revoked security details for former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former National Security Adviser John Bolton, and former chief aide Brian Hook.
This was despite the Biden administration warning that these officials were targets of threats from Iran due to their roles in Trump first-term policies.
While speaking at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Monday, Trump was asked if he would revoke security for Biden’s son.
“Well, we have done that with many. I would say if there are 18 with Hunter Biden, that will be something I’ll look at this afternoon,” Trump replied. “I’m going to take a look at that.”.
