US President-elect Donald Trump has named tech billionaire Elon Musk and conservative activist Vivek Ramaswamy to head a new initiative aimed at overhauling the federal government.
The newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) will focus on reducing bureaucracy, slashing regulations, and cutting wasteful spending.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Trump explained that the department’s mission is critical to his administration’s “Save America Movement.”
He called it a necessary step toward dismantling excessive government structures, saying, “Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures and restructure Federal Agencies.”
Trump likened the mission of DOGE to a modern-day “Manhattan Project” and promised that the department would take a bold, entrepreneurial approach to government reform.
“Republican politicians have dreamed about the objectives of ‘DOGE’ for a very long time,” he added.
The department will work closely with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to drive large-scale structural changes within the government.
Musk and Ramaswamy are expected to complete their work by July 4, 2026—the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
In response to his appointment, Elon Musk emphasized transparency and accountability.
“All actions of the Department of Government Efficiency will be posted online for maximum transparency,” he said.
Musk promised that the public could track the department’s efforts and provide feedback if they felt certain areas of government were being mismanaged.
“We will also have a leaderboard for most insanely dumb spending of your tax dollars,” Musk quipped. “This will be both extremely tragic and extremely entertaining.”
Musk also warned that the stakes of the department’s work were high, stating, “Either we get government efficient or America goes bankrupt. That’s what it comes down to. Wish I were wrong, but it’s true.”
