A Nigerian police inspector and die-hard Arsenal supporter, Stephen Enang, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, moments after he witnessed his favorite team claim a stunning 3–0 win over Real Madrid.
According to reports from Linda Ikeji Blog, Enang, who hails from Ekori in Cross River State’s Yakurr Local Government Area, was stationed at the Akim Police Division situated along IBB Way in Calabar.
Eyewitnesses say he was watching the UEFA Champions League match at a viewing center along Abang-Asang Street when it occurred.
“He was in good spirits—healthy, happy, enjoying every goal,” a witness said. “Arsenal scored the first, second, and third goal, and he was over the moon.
He jumped up in joy a few times. But once the final whistle was blown, when everybody was leaving, we noticed Stephen not standing up. That’s when we knew something was wrong.” It has been reported that Enang had reclined in his chair and become unconscious.
He was rushed by passersby to Akim Police Hospital, where doctors tried to revive him. Sadly, he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. The death has come as a shock to his colleagues, friends, and relatives, remembering that many had him as a jovial and diligent officer. As at the time of this report, the Akwa Ibom State Command of the police has yet to make an official comment on the matter.
