Tochi Sparks Debate on Marriage and Financial Independence for Women

Former Big Brother Naija contestant Tochi has ignited a heated discussion online after sharing his views on how financial independence could impact women in marriages. In a recent Instagram story, Tochi suggested that many women stay in their marriages primarily due to financial dependence.

He argued that if every married woman were given N100 million to start their own ventures, a significant number would choose to leave their marriages.

His post read:
“If you give 100 married women N100 million each to go establish themselves, in two weeks, 95 will leave their marriage.”

Tochi’s statement quickly gained traction, sparking debate among social media users. Some agreed, arguing that many women remain in unhappy marriages because they lack financial security.

Others, however, countered that marriage is built on more than just financial stability and that wealth alone does not determine its success.

One user, @verapatrick, shared their perspective:
“I think what he is trying to say is that most married women are treated so badly that if they had financial freedom, they would rather be single.”

Another user, @edafe_vanvic, added a different angle:

“This also means that 95 percent of women are in marriages for survival purposes. They just want someone to be responsible for their financial lives 😂.

If they finally become financially independent, they may no longer find marriage interesting because, to them, the man would have nothing else to offer 😂.”
