Nigerian music star Tiwa Savage has revealed why she avoids signing upcoming artistes, citing the stress and responsibility of managing musicians. In a recent interview with Forbes Africa, the Water & Garri hitmaker admitted that she doesn’t believe she has the right “gift” to mentor and oversee artistes under her label.
Instead, she prefers to support talents in a different way.
“Everyone always says to me, ‘When are you going to sign an artiste?’ I don’t think I have the gift to sign another artiste because artistes are stressful.
I could just be sleeping, and then I will wake up, and my artist is trending for something else,” she explained.
At 45, Savage is instead focusing on building a music school where aspiring musicians can hone their skills before getting signed by record labels that can fully support their careers.
“But I do have the gift to help, which is why I am trying to do the music school, where you can go and later sign to a label that can actually help you,” she added.
