In a with Tay podcast, renowned singer Timi Dakolo shared heartfelt revelations about his upbringing. Growing up, Dakolo found himself in the care of his grandmother, as his parents, who were young and unprepared, made the difficult decision to leave him in her care shortly after his birth.
Reflecting on his early years, Dakolo recounted how his parents, grappling with their own youthfulness and lack of resources, entrusted him to his grandmother’s care. “My parents, I don’t know why they were doing knacking at a very young age. They were very young so they didn’t know what they were doing,” he mused. “When they had me they were like ‘Let’s go and see your grandma’ Then they dropped me with her and ran away because they were too young and didn’t know what to do with me.”
Raised by his grandmother, Dakolo emphasized that he never felt a void in love or care. Despite the circumstances, his grandmother provided him with everything he needed, stepping into the role of both parent and guardian. “I grew up with my grandmother and it didn’t affect me in any way,” Dakolo affirmed. “I did not lack love and my grandmother was my parent so I didn’t miss anyone. She was doing everything that concerned me.”
Dakolo also shed light on the formative experiences of his childhood, revealing how the responsibility thrust upon him at a young age shaped his character. “When you are raised by an old woman, at a young age, alone with her at home, you become an adult at a very young age. You would be doing things while your mates are playing,” he shared. “… and you must sell something. I sell everything in season. I sold orange, ice water. Those days they used to sell waterproof, black and yellow, and pure black color.”
