The Action Places the Country in a Negative Perspective – GEJ reacts to State of Emergency Declaration in Rivers State

Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, the immediate past president of Nigeria, says suspension of Rivers state Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and other Rivers State’s elected officials mar Nigeria’s reputation The former Nigerian leader asserted this while presenting remarks as Chairman during the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium event in Abuja on Saturday, March 22.

“All those actions by highly placed actors in the executive and the legislative arms of government put the nation in poor light.” He further stated that it was not customary for former presidents to issue statements on issues, such that they would warm the polity. He went further to state, however, that his declaration became necessary following appeals from some Nigerians, urging him to comment on the situation in Rivers State.

He went on to add that the country’s reputation and the level of investments a country gets is left to the executive, legislature and judiciary of a country. Goodluck Jonathan faulted the provision where an individual can instruct the judiciary, adding that it makes it difficult for anyone to have confidence in the judiciary.

According source, President Tinubu on Tuesday, 18 March issued a State of Emergency in Rivers state owing to the perennial political crisis within the state. The President suspended his deputy Professor Ngozi Odu, the Governor Fubara, and state members of the House of Assembly for six months, as well as assigning a sole administrator for the state during a national address.
