Tension in Lagos Assembly as Speaker Meranda Faces Pressure to Resign Amid Security Clampdown

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, is under intense pressure to resign, with reports suggesting she may step down by Monday. The crisis escalated after operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and other armed security personnel stormed the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, heightening tension in the state.

Popular TV anchor Seun Okinbaloye, known for his political insights, announced the development via his X handle on Monday morning, stating: “Resignation looms in Lagos! It’s a matter of hours.”

In videos captured by correspondents, Speaker Meranda was seen in tears as House members chanted, “Meranda we want,” protesting the armed security presence within the Assembly premises.

The turmoil follows the return of impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa to Nigeria, who has fiercely contested his removal, deepening the rift within the Assembly. Speculation is rife that Obasa may reclaim his position, especially after reported interventions from President Bola Tinubu.

The standoff has plunged the Lagos State legislative body into uncertainty, with political observers closely monitoring developments as the power struggle intensifies.
