In a recent appearance on The Cruz Show, Tems opened up about her deep passion for rap music and shared how she used to emulate Lil Wayne.
The Oscar-nominated artist traced her love for hip-hop back to her childhood, largely inspired by her older brother.
“My brother is the one that introduced me to rap because he used to listen to a lot of rap music… That’s how I got the influences,” Tems revealed during the interview.
She fondly recalled pretending to be Lil Wayne when she was younger, highlighting tracks like “Mrs. Officer,” “Mr. Carter,” “Comfortable,” and “Hustle Music” as some of her favorites.
When asked about her rapping skills, Tems acknowledged she has a rap voice, though she hesitated to showcase it.
“It is a little cringy,” she admitted, adding a touch of humor to her response.
Tems also expressed her excitement about the possibility of meeting Lil Wayne, noting that she hasn’t had the chance yet but hopes it happens soon.
Her dedication to hip-hop shines through in her debut album, Born In The Wild, which features the rap track “T Unit” and a collaboration with Grammy-winning rapper J. Cole on “Free Fall.”
Tems has collaborated with various artists, including Future on the Grammy-winning single “Wait For U” and Drake on “Fountain” from his album Certified Lover Boy.
