Telecom companies in Nigeria are increasingly adopting renewable energy solutions in response to skyrocketing diesel prices, which now account for 35% of their operating expenses.
The industry, reliant on generators due to unreliable power supply, uses an average of 40 million litres of diesel monthly. As diesel prices surged by 64.58% in a year, costs rose from N34.17 billion in 2023 to N56.24 billion in 2024. Airtel Nigeria’s CTO, Harmanpreet Dhillon, confirmed the shift towards hybrid energy solutions like solar and lithium batteries to manage costs.
