TCN Targets Electricity Supply Improvement With New Transformers

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has taken a major step toward ensuring reliability and efficiency in the supply of electricity with the commissioning of new power transformers at three key substations located in Alausa, Ota, and Alagbon.

These upgrades are part of a $200 million World Bank-backed initiative aimed at enhancing grid stability and boosting the reliability of electricity distribution in Nigeria.

Speaking during a press tour of the Lagos region on Wednesday, TCN’s managing director, Sule Abdulaziz explained that the commissioning of a 125 MVA transformer at the Alausa 132/33KV substation has increased the capacity of the substation from 105 MVA to 230 MVA.

He said the upgrade will provide additional bulk power for Ikeja Electric to distribute to areas including Ikeja, Oregun, Alausa, and Ojodu among surrounding communities.

While it is clear that improving electricity nationally is a government priority, realizing the 10,000MW target in 2025 requires serious investment,” said Abdulaziz.

Comparative to the Indian case, which sets aside US$500 million yearly to advance the power sector, Abdulaziz pressed that Nigeria’s success rests upon serious financial investment in the power sector.

On 3 April, he explained that a 100/125 MVA transformer was installed at the 132/33kV Ota substation, increasing its capacity from 160 MVA to 260 MVA. He further added that with this upgrade, electricity supplies to customers of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) within Ota, Iju, Sango, Ijoko, and Atan areas had improved.

He said that on 18 January, two 100/125 MVA transformers were commissioned at the 330/132/33kV Alagbon substation, expanding its capacity to 440 MVA from 240 MVA.

He said these upgrades help Eko Distribution Company distribute improved power supply to the communities of Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Banana Island, Lagos Island and Lekki.

These projects demonstrate TCN’s commitment to addressing the challenges of distribution in Lagos and Ogun States, thereby ensuring steady power supply to residential, commercial, and industrial customers,” he added.

He reminded them that electricity remained one of the key ingredients of national development, hence, the government was committed to addressing the challenges facing the power sector across the nation.

According to him, similar upgrades were being undertaken in other regions, including Kano, Maiduguri, and Yola.

With these developments, Lagos and Ogun states are, therefore, expected to witness improved power supply, thereby marking a major leap toward achieving the nation’s aspirations in the energy sector,” he said.
