Nigeria’s Church of the Brethren, known as Ekklesiyar ‘Yan’Uwa A Nigeria (EYN), is calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and legislators to stand firm in protecting Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring that policy is for the greater good. In a passionate appeal during the church’s Majalisa 2025 event, the EYN President called on the president to be resolute against executive overreach and to prioritize people-centered leadership. He also called on senators and representatives in the House of Representatives to bear the shared responsibility of maintaining democratic values. The EYN President emphasized that all arms of government must respect press freedom as a key ingredient in any thriving democracy. Speaking on the topic, “A Living Church in a Decaying World,” Dr. Daniel Dali, a former President of EYN, called on Christians to be a beacon of hope and moral light. National transformation is everyone’s duty, he said. The General Secretary of the church, Rev. James Musa, informed the media that the yearly Majalisa provides the church community a forum to take stock of their faith, confront challenges, and celebrate successes as well as to chart the way forward. Reading a goodwill message to the conclave on behalf of National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu, Ambassador Kevin Peters urged the church to work with government efforts aimed at entrenching peace and reconciliation. Nigeria has been severely hurt by war. The church has a responsibility to guide healing, to call for forgiveness, and to help rebuild broken communities. Peace grows where forgiveness is planted, and revenge belongs to God,” Ribadu’s message stated. President Bola Tinubu has extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Justice Ibitola Adebisi Sotuminu, former Chief Judge of Lagos State, who passed away at the age of 86. In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the President also commiserated with the Body of Benchers, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the National Council of Women’s Societies, and the International Federation of Women Lawyers, describing the late jurist as a woman of integrity, honour, and diligence. Recalling their shared time in public service, Tinubu highlighted Justice Sotuminu’s instrumental role in judicial reforms during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State. He credited her leadership as Chief Judge with strengthening public trust in the judiciary and modernising Lagos’ legal system. Justice Sotuminu’s remarkable legal career spanned more than four decades. Beginning as a magistrate in 1969, she rose to become Chief Magistrate, and in 1984, became the first woman Chief Registrar of the Lagos State High Court. She was appointed a High Court Judge in 1986 and later served as Chief Judge from 2001 to 2004. During her tenure as Chief Judge, she championed court infrastructure expansion, digitalisation of judicial processes, and introduced measures to speed up justice delivery, laying a solid foundation for Lagos’ reputation as a legal benchmark in Nigeria. As final funeral rites begin, President Tinubu prayed for her peaceful repose and divine comfort for her loved ones. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emphatically guaranteed that President Bola Tinubu will never fall like former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2027 general elections even as cases of insecurity in Nigeria are on the rise. The governing party made the announcement following growing concern over the rise in violent attacks across Nigeria, many of which are suspected to sway voters in the next election. The APC acknowledged insecurity played a significant role in Jonathan losing the 2015 election but insisted it is doing all it can to prevent history from repeating itself. Speaking with THISDAY, the APC’s spokesperson Mr. Bala Ibrahim rejected claims that the escalating violence symbolizes a politically motivated conspiracy aimed at undermining Tinubu’s regime. He informed that the president is not sleeping on his laurels but well understands the dangers. “If this is actually the thinking of the naysayers, the government cannot just fold its arms,” Ibrahim said. “President Tinubu is aware of the issue that can cause him to lose the election, and he’s acting to prevent it.” He cited the appointment of National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, as one of the decisive moves in strengthening Nigeria’s security system. Ribadu, according to Ibrahim, has been touring areas of strife to re-invigorate the insurgency fight and to encourage the troops. Referring to the recent developments, Ibrahim also quoted President Tinubu as having directed Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, to relocate to the North-West — a region that has been plagued by banditry. This, he said, has yielded great victories for the military. “The president is not going to be defeated by himself,” said Ibrahim. “He’s establishing steps to ensure results and is giving priority to Nigerians’ security. People are freely moving now in places that were once deemed unsafe — like corridors from Abuja to Sokoto and Maiduguri.” He acknowledged that some hotspots remain, but said these are signs of progress, not failure. “It means we’re getting close to victory. When a battle is nearing its end, the heat intensifies. But that’s not defeat — that’s the final push.” The APC also cited diplomatic matters as being part of the insecurity problem. Nigeria’s tense relationship with its Francophone neighbors — especially in light of Niger’s recent political crisis — has undermined regional collaboration in the fight against insurgency, Ibrahim added. “Nigeria cannot do this alone. The current tension with countries like Niger has hindered joint operations through the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTF),” he said. “But thanks to Ribadu’s strategic efforts, we’ve seen a noticeable drop in the scale and frequency of attacks.” He further claimed that attacks in states like Zamfara, Kebbi, and Sokoto have reduced, indicating that the government’s counter-insurgency efforts are starting to pay off. While there are increasing demands for action, others are calling for action. Afenifere, a socio-political organization of the Yoruba, has called on the federal government to collaborate with the governors in order to come up with new mechanisms for addressing insecurity. In the Senate, senators representing the 19 northern states decried the continued attacks in Plateau and Benue, promising to resist any move to normalize violence. Abia former DSS Director Mike Ejiofor also added that the current insecurity is caused by intelligence lapses, insufficient manpower, and a lack of high-tech technology in Nigeria’s security systems.   Related Posts Tinubu Unveils Ambitious Economic Plan to Halve Inflation by 2025 President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has outlined an ambitious economic agenda aimed at reducing Nigeria’s inflation rate from the current 34.6% Read more Nigeria and the British Monarchy: A Legacy of Visits and Diplomatic Ties Throughout history, Nigeria has enjoyed a unique relationship with the British Monarchy, marked by mutual visits that reflect shared historical, Read more 2024 Elections: A Mixed Bag of Milestones, Setbacks, and Electoral Integrity Challenges The year 2024 marked a significant milestone for Nigeria as it celebrated 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed hints of splits within President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, branding the swapping of the party’s 2027 ticket “unfounded and baseless.” While President Tinubu has not officially indicated that he will contest re-election for a second term, political supporters are already mobilizing support ahead of the 2027 elections. Against this background of hype, news emerged that Tinubu was considering replacing his running mate Shettima. Gistreel reports that APC’s National Director of Publicity Alhaji Bala Ibrahim emphatically rejected the idea, referring to the reports as “beer-parlour gossip” and without factual basis. This is mere rumor without substance. These are beer-parlour discussion that need not be taken seriously,” Ibrahim said. He also clarified that any change to the party’s presidential ticket—if ever on the cards—would involve broad consultation with party leaders and stakeholders, not whimsical decisions. “The removal of a vice president—if it ever arises—is far beyond individual discretion. It is one for broad-based consultation involving principal party organs and leaders,” he added. At the same time, calls for more political representation grew in the North Central region as stakeholders reemphasized their demand for representation at the highest levels of government. Leaders from Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Niger, Kogi, and Kwara states met in Abuja, requesting that political parties zone the vice presidency or presidency to the area in 2027. Speaking at the press conference, Professor Nghargbu K’tso, the leader of the delegation, lamented the region’s historical political marginalization. “Of the six geopolitical regions of Nigeria, North Central and South East alone have not occupied offices of president or vice president in the past 26 years of the Fourth Republic,” he said. “In fact, the situation of the North Central is worse than that of the South East, which at least had Dr. Alex Ekwueme as vice president from 1979 to 1983.” The delegation insisted that if President Tinubu is to be nominated for re-election, justice calls for the North Central to be given the vice-presidential slot. But APC was quick to dismiss the call as “unrealistic” and “untimely.” Alhaji Bala Ibrahim described the call as “dead on arrival,” citing the zone’s comparatively lesser electoral figures compared to regions like the North West. The North Central would not see the vice presidency or the presidency as entitlement, especially with its comparatively lower share in elections,” he added. “Those are untimely discussions that should be postponed until President Tinubu has finished his first term.”. President Bola Tinubu will go to Paris, France, on Wednesday on a short working visit to conduct a mid-term review of his administration’s performance and strategize on future reforms. The statement also hailed the appointment of Oyo APC Chairman, Pharmacist Olayide Abas, as Board Chairman of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kaduna. Describing it as a demonstration of Tinubu’s readiness to work with capable hands, the party was hopeful that Abas would be able to make positive contributions to national development. “President Tinubu was adequately prepared for the role of taking Nigeria to greater heights. Delta Central Senatorial District Senator, Ede Dafinone, has praised President Bola Tinubu and Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, over the impressive pace and extent of work on the Benin-Sapele-Effurun Expressway. Dafinone emphasized that his letter to the minister and consistent follow-up were included in the work in progress, with relief finally reaching commuters and businesses on the vital road. He also welcomed the recent completion of the Benin-Asaba Expressway rehabilitation, which he described as a show of Tinubu’s dedication towards reconstructing Nigeria’s infrastructure. The Tinubu government’s commitment to infrastructural refurbishment is seen in the consistent construction on major highways that have been in deplorable condition for decades. These are crucial to economic development in Delta State, the Niger Delta, and Nigeria as a whole,” he stated. He praised Minister Umahi for his initiative work in seeing proper attention and funds for priority road projects. The Ministry of Works’ objective is that, as Dafinone described it, it is with the overall aim of the government to develop national roads and economic advancement. The senator urged Nigerians, particularly from the Niger Delta, to join the Tinubu administration in helping to revive the infrastructure of the country. He reaffirmed his commitment to spearheading the efforts for increased federal development projects within Delta Central and beyond.
