Dennis Chinwendu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker representing Isiala Ngwa South Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, has officially defected to the Labour Party (LP) along with his supporters.     At a welcoming ceremony in Umuoba, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, Abia State Governor Alex Otti hailed the LP as an inclusive party committed to good governance. He assured Chinwendu and his supporters of full integration and equal treatment, emphasizing that the party does not discriminate between old and new members.   “Honourable Chinwendu, we are glad to have you join our party, and we thank you for bringing this multitude, including your leaders,” Otti said. “In the Labour Party, you will be given the same status as those who joined earlier.”   Speaking on his defection, Chinwendu credited his decision to Otti’s good governance and transformative leadership, which he said had significantly changed the state’s narrative in less than two years.   He assured the governor of continued support, noting that the people of Isiala Ngwa South were ready to reciprocate Otti’s efforts in 2027.   Other key figures present at the event included Senator Darlington Nwokocha, a former representative of Isiala Ngwa North/South Federal Constituency, and his successor, Ginger Onwusibe.   A major highlight of the event was the official presentation of the LP flag to Chinwendu and his supporters by Smart Ogbonna, the Labour Party chairman in the area. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Action Congress (AAC) in Zamfara State faced major setbacks over the weekend as top members of both parties defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).   The defectors, including the 2023 AAC governorship candidate, Muhammad Kabir Sani, and the Forum of PDP Former State House of Assembly Candidates, were officially received into the APC at a grand event on Saturday. They joined through the Jajiyya Political Movement, under the leadership of Zamfara State APC chairman, Alhaji Isiyaka Ajiya Anka.   The move was endorsed by Hon. Dr. Aminu Sani Jaji, Chairman of the House Committee on Ecological Fund, who commended the defectors for their decision. He described their defection as a positive development for both the party in Zamfara and Nigeria as a whole.   Jaji assured the new members of fair treatment and full inclusion in party affairs, emphasizing that their political experience would strengthen both the Jajiyya Movement and the APC in the state.   “I urge you to remain with APC and contribute your best for the growth of our party,” Jaji stated.   Alhaji Isiyaka Ajiya Anka, the APC state chairman, hailed the Jajiyya Political Movement as the most formidable leadership structure within the party, with strong influence across the 14 local government areas of the state.   He assured the defectors of equal opportunities and urged them to work towards fostering unity, peace, and stability within the APC.   Similarly, Alhaji Aliyu Abubakar, chairman of the Jajiyya Political Movement Coordination Committee, described the mass defection as a major success for the APC in Zamfara.   With this latest wave of defections, the APC in Zamfara State has further consolidated its political strength ahead of future elections. The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal resumed proceedings on Monday in Benin City, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) preparing for a legal showdown over the outcome of the September 21 gubernatorial election.   The PDP’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo, is contesting the victory of APC’s Governor Monday Okpebholo, as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The PDP alleges widespread electoral irregularities, including vote inflation in APC strongholds, unlawful cancellation of PDP votes, and non-compliance with the Electoral Act.   Speaking ahead of the hearing, PDP spokesperson Barrister Tony Ehilebo expressed optimism, stating, “We have overwhelming evidence to prove the election was rigged. We are confident the tribunal will restore the stolen mandate and uphold democratic integrity.”   The APC dismissed the allegations, labeling them baseless. Chief Alex Okosun, an APC chieftain, urged the PDP to move on, emphasizing, “Politicians must stop litigating every election. Asue is Senator Monday Okpebholo’s Esan brother. He should support the Governor to move Edo forward. Having an Esan governor is a significant milestone.”   The tribunal’s proceedings are expected to draw significant public attention, as both parties remain steadfast in their positions on the contentious election. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, has clarified that no merger agreements are in place with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), or any other political party in preparation for the 2027 election. Obi made this statement during a press conference in Abuja on January 2, 2025. The former governor of Anambra emphasized that no formal collaboration or deal had been reached with other political groups. He urged all Nigerians who are committed to the country’s future to unite ahead of the 2027 election in order to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC), which he accused of mismanaging national resources. He also expressed deep concern over the country’s security situation, describing it as “unfortunate” and lamenting the needless loss of life due to banditry, terrorism, and kidnappings for ransom. Additionally, Obi highlighted the persistent corruption in Nigeria and criticized the high cost of governance, which he claims has contributed to an alarming rise in public debt under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu. Obi also noted that government officials have exacerbated the nation’s financial woes by engaging in frequent foreign travels, misusing public funds in 2024. In the 2023 presidential election, Tinubu triumphed in 12 of Nigeria’s 36 states, securing a total of 8,794,726 votes—nearly two million more than his closest rival, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP. Atiku, who has run for president six times, garnered 6,984,520 votes, while Obi, a first-time candidate, achieved 6,101,533 votes. The Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Iliyasu Damagum, has reminded Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Kano State governor and presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), of the pivotal role the PDP played in his political journey.   Speaking during an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Tuesday, Damagum emphasized that no other party has shaped Kwankwaso’s political career like the PDP, which he credited for nurturing and contributing significantly to his rise in politics.   Addressing Kwankwaso’s recent criticisms of the PDP, Damagum dismissed claims that the party is losing its relevance, asserting that the PDP remains resilient despite challenges. “When he left the party in 2015, despite the difficulties, the PDP was not ‘dead.’ If we could survive his exit then, why would anyone think we are irrelevant now?”   He further stated, “Kwankwaso owes much of his political success to the PDP. We still hold hope that he might return to the party to help address the injustices of the current government.”   Damagum questioned the impact of Kwankwaso’s move to another party, highlighting that the PDP remains the only party capable of winning elections without holding federal power. “Senator Kwankwaso may have left, but how many states has his new party won? The facts speak for themselves.”   The remarks come amid growing tensions between Kwankwaso and the PDP leadership, as the latter seeks to reaffirm its place in Nigeria’s political landscape.
