In a bid to promote safe sex and curb the spread of HIV/AIDS, the Osun State government has announced plans to distribute free condoms and lubricants at selected malls and lounges across the state on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2025. The initiative, spearheaded by the Osun State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS (O-SACA), aims to raise awareness about HIV prevention and encourage responsible sexual practices. Olusegun Daramola, the executive secretary of O-SACA, emphasized the importance of making informed choices, especially on a day known for romantic celebrations. “To support safe practices, the agency will provide condoms and lubricants at selected locations, including malls and lounges. Please approach our vendors to access these valuable resources. Let’s share love, not the disease,” he said in a statement on Thursday. Daramola also urged residents to avoid unprotected sex and get tested to know their HIV status. “It’s essential to avoid risky behaviors, such as unprotected sexual intercourse. We encourage those who haven’t already done so to get tested and know their status,” he advised. Reaffirming the state government’s commitment to reducing HIV prevalence, he noted that Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration is dedicated to tackling the public health challenge and working toward ending AIDS by 2030. Following the resurgence of communal conflict between the Ifon and Ilobu communities, Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has declared a curfew to restore peace and prevent further violence. The curfew, which restricts movement from 7 pm to 7 am, takes effect immediately and will remain in place until further notice. This decision was announced in a press statement by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, in Osogbo on Thursday, January 16, 2025. To maintain order, a team of security operatives comprising the Army, Police, and Civil Defence has been deployed to the troubled areas. Governor Adeleke also called on all stakeholders to cooperate with the government’s efforts to resolve the crisis peacefully. The state government has also outlined additional steps to address the conflict. An enlarged Committee of Stakeholders, including community representatives, service chiefs, members of the State Council of Obas, and other relevant bodies, will be formed to find a lasting solution. In a warning to potential troublemakers, the government stressed that anyone found instigating or participating in violence will face legal prosecution. “Anyone or group of persons found engaging in violence, knowingly or unknowingly, will face the full wrath of the law,” the statement concluded.
