The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has promised that he would be released from detention soon, asserting that he was certain of being released before April 2025 elapses, after four years in detention. Kanu made this while he was receiving a visit from the President-General of the Igbo Community Association (ICA), Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, in the Department of State Services (DSS) Abuja centre where he has been detained. In a statement made after the visit, Ezenekwe noted that Kanu seemed cheerful and in good spirits, considering his prolonged detention. He further stated that Kanu had even gained weight, surprising many as they had expected him to look visibly traumatized by his ordeal. On the visit, Kanu reasserted his uncompromising commitment to the struggle for self-determination, once again emphasizing the call for a referendum to the Igbo people. He once more makes it clear that his only “offense” is urging the region to wake up from sleep with no apologies for doing so. Kanu also decried the lack of good leadership among the Igbo, contending that such a deficiency had caused the voice of the region to grow weak at the time of its need. Despite the drama, Kanu was reportedly hopeful about his lawyers and his release from custody in no distant future. The statement reads: “Today at the DSS headquarters in Abuja, I had the honor of visiting Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). During our discussion, he appeared healthier and more relaxed and reaffirmed his resilience despite his current circumstances. “He called for a referendum, describing it as a pivotal step towards self-determination, and reiterated his firm belief that he has committed no offense other than urging our people to awake from their slumber. “He communicated a strong message of self-assurance, noting that he is taking his prescribed medications and remains in good spirits. “More significantly, he expressed disappointment at the apparent leadership vacuum within the Igbo community—a neglect that has allowed our people’s voice to fade at a critical moment. “Kanu expressed unwavering confidence in his legal team and his hope for release by the end of April 2025. This resonated as a powerful testament to his dedication and fortitude.” Related Posts Tinubu Unveils Ambitious Economic Plan to Halve Inflation by 2025 President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has outlined an ambitious economic agenda aimed at reducing Nigeria’s inflation rate from the current 34.6% Read more Nigeria and the British Monarchy: A Legacy of Visits and Diplomatic Ties Throughout history, Nigeria has enjoyed a unique relationship with the British Monarchy, marked by mutual visits that reflect shared historical, Read more 2024 Elections: A Mixed Bag of Milestones, Setbacks, and Electoral Integrity Challenges The year 2024 marked a significant milestone for Nigeria as it celebrated 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule. Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has pleaded not guilty to new terrorism charges lodged against him by the federal government in the Federal High Court in Abuja, as reported by Gistreel. During re-arraignment on Friday, Kanu was accused of: Engaging in terrorism acts Running an unlawful radio station Calling for Nigeria’s dissolution The federal government’s lead counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), expressed his willingness to prosecute the case and applied for an adjournment to get witnesses ready for a speed-up hearing. The defense counsel to Kanu, Kanu Agabi (SAN), did not oppose the application. Therefore, Justice James Omotosho adjourned the trial to April 29, May 2, and May 6, 2025. Unlike during his court appearance on February 10—where he lashed out at the trial—Kanu was composed this time. Through his lawyer, Agabi (SAN), he made a public apology to key legal actors in his matter. “I hereby apologise to Justice Binta Nyako; she did not deserve the unjustified attack. I also apologise to Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN); he deserves the highest respect,” the apology stated. Kanu had previously objected to being tried by Justice Binta Nyako, who had initially been withdrawn from the case on September 24, 2024, before being reinstated later. The objection led to Chief Judge John Tsoho reassigned the case to Justice Omotosho on March 4, 2025. Anambra State governor Chukwuma Soludo has said that releasing the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu from captivity and security intimidation in the South-East are two different things. One segment of stakeholders in the South East has maintained that Kanu’s release would be to deflate the security crisis in the South East. Kanu has been in detention by the Department of State Services (DSS) for about 5 years since he was arrested from Kenya by the Nigerian government in disregard of several demands for his release. While speaking in a media chat to celebrate his third anniversary, Governor Soludo, who is among those who have been calling for Kanu’s release said; “The release of Nnamdi Kanu for me is different from the issue of security, I separate the two, I don’t link the two. Nnamdi Kanu for me is for us to have a conversation of a long-term future for the Igbos and that is a different conversation. For the criminals who are kidnappers, we have given them an olive branch, come out, we will train you, we will empower you, we will rehabilitate you, if you don’t we take you out.” Soludo made his continued demand for the release of the IPOB leader with the aim of having him present so that he could be brought into a bigger discussion to establish the future of the Igbo people, “a whole lot of this Simon Ekpa and some of this his band of criminals took over and turned the things into a killing spree, just killing people with reckless abandon.” Reports indicated that Simon Ekpa, who claimed to have become IPOB leader following Kanu’s detention, was arrested in November last year in Finland where he resides by the Finnish police for what it termed “public exhortation to an offence, committed with terrorist intent.” Governor Soludo said that he does not know what Ekpa is looking for but to “swindle people for money.”   Related Posts Tinubu Unveils Ambitious Economic Plan to Halve Inflation by 2025 President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has outlined an ambitious economic agenda aimed at reducing Nigeria’s inflation rate from the current 34.6% Read more Nigeria and the British Monarchy: A Legacy of Visits and Diplomatic Ties Throughout history, Nigeria has enjoyed a unique relationship with the British Monarchy, marked by mutual visits that reflect shared historical, Read more 2024 Elections: A Mixed Bag of Milestones, Setbacks, and Electoral Integrity Challenges The year 2024 marked a significant milestone for Nigeria as it celebrated 25 years of uninterrupted democratic rule.
