Man Betrays Nephew, Aids Bandits in Kidnapping Family for Ransom in Kaduna

Operatives of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Intelligence Response Team (IRT) have arrested a 50-year-old informant, Ado Haruna, for conspiring with bandits to kidnap his nephew, Alhaji Bashiru Anas, and his family in Zaria, Kaduna State. Despite facilitating the abduction and a ransom payment of N13 million, along with four motorcycles and N300,000 worth of Airtel recharge cards, Haruna received only N200,000 as his share. The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, paraded Haruna alongside other suspects in Abuja, revealing that he led three bandits Shago Yaro, Tanimu Ayuba, and Lamido Dantajiri to his nephew’s house under the guise of a victim. 60 Days in Captivity The attack, which occurred at 1 a.m., saw the armed bandits storming Alhaji Anas’ residence. When they could not find him, they abducted his two wives, three children, younger brother, and his brother’s wife. The victims were held for 60 days in Buruku Sabo Birni, where ransom negotiations took place. During interrogation, Haruna confessed to his involvement, stating, “I knew only one of the bandits who asked me to show them my nephew’s house. I led them there but hid my identity from Anas.” He further admitted, “For the 60 days his family was in captivity, I used Alhaji Anas’ phone to communicate with the bandits. They collected over N10 million, but I was given just N200,000, which I used to buy maize.” Haruna expressed shock at his arrest, adding, “I don’t know how the police found out about my involvement. Life pushed me into crime.” Notorious Kidnapper Also Arrested Alongside Haruna, the police also apprehended Nyali Hassan, a notorious kidnapper linked to multiple abductions in Kano and Kaduna States. Acting on intelligence, the IRT operatives traced Hassan to Stara Rago, Kano, where he was arrested with an AK-47 rifle and two empty magazines. Hassan, a 35-year-old father of 10, confessed to being part of a six-man gang specializing in kidnappings across Makarfi, Bari, Yankin Rago, and Beli towns. He named his accomplices as Kawuje, Moude, Babagida, Kabiru, and Umar, revealing that Umar remains at large with two additional AK-47 rifles. Kidnapping as a Lucrative Business Hassan admitted to kidnapping at least eight victims, collecting ransoms between N1 million and N10 million. He disclosed, “Some victims managed to escape while the guards slept. I mainly targeted wealthy individuals.” Explaining his transition into crime, Hassan said, “I know the Qur’an condemns crime, but my friends influenced me. I saw them spending lavishly at gatherings, so I decided to join them.” He revealed that he used his ransom proceeds to purchase a pickup truck and inherited 20 cows from his late father. He also credited his associate, Umar, for teaching him how to shoot an AK-47 rifle. Police Intensify Efforts to Arrest Remaining Gang Members ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi assured that security operatives were working to apprehend the remaining gang members and recover more weapons.
