‎Sultan Declares Ramadan 1446 AH, Tinubu Urges Unity and Reflection

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared today, March 1, 2025, as the first day of Ramadan 1446 AH in Nigeria.

In a nationwide radio and television broadcast on Friday, the Sultan announced the sighting of the new crescent in various parts of the country. He stated that reports from Muslim leaders and organizations were verified and authenticated by the national and state moon-sighting committees, confirming the end of Sha’aban 1446 AH.

“In accordance with Islamic law, Muslims are to commence fasting on Saturday accordingly,” he declared.

Abubakar called on the Muslim faithful to dedicate themselves to worship throughout the holy month and to pray for Nigeria’s peace, progress, and prosperity. He also urged wealthy individuals to support the less privileged and emphasized the need for religious tolerance and unity.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a sacred period in which Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, engage in prayers, and reflect on their faith.

Tinubu Commends Muslims, Highlights Economic Progress

President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Nigerian Muslims and the global Muslim community as they begin the 2025 Ramadan fast. In a statement on Friday, he urged the faithful to embrace the core values of piety, humility, and selflessness that define the holy month.

“Ramadan is a time for spiritual rejuvenation, self-discipline, and empathy for the less fortunate,” Tinubu said. “Let us use this period to strengthen our bonds with Allah and one another, fostering unity and peace in our communities.”

The president described this year’s Ramadan as a season of “renewed hope and progress” for Nigeria, citing recent economic improvements under his administration. He pointed to a stabilizing exchange rate, declining fuel prices, and a drop in the cost of essential food items as indicators of relief for fasting Muslims and the broader population.

“Our administration’s bold and transformative policies are beginning to yield positive results,” he stated. “The GDP for the last quarter of 2024 showed a marked improvement over the same period in 2023.”

Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to food security and agricultural productivity, pledging further investments in mechanization, input support, and innovative farming techniques as the wet season approaches.

As Nigerians embark on this sacred month, the president called for collective prayers and actions toward national development.

“May the blessings of this holy month illuminate our hearts and homes, and may we emerge from it as better individuals and a stronger nation,” he concluded.

Ramadan is expected to last until late March, culminating in the celebration of Eid al-Fitr.
