Stray Bullet Kills Trader in Bayelsa as Cult Violence Escalates

A stray bullet from a suspected cultist has killed a trader, Mrs. Christiana Onoakpoma Rose, at Swali Market in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, sparking fear and concern among residents and traders. The tragic incident, which occurred on Monday, is the latest in a series of violent cult-related clashes that have claimed at least five lives in recent weeks.

Confirming the incident, the spokesman of the Bayelsa State Police Command, Musa Mohammed, stated that the suspected cultists involved in the clash have been arrested and are currently under interrogation. He assured the public that a thorough investigation was underway to ensure justice for the deceased, who hailed from Delta State.

Residents and security analysts have raised serious concerns over the increasing menace of cult violence in the state, warning that if urgent measures are not taken, the situation could spiral out of control. A Swali resident, Mr. Nicholas Odoko, urged authorities to implement stricter security measures to curb cult activities before more lives are lost.

Meanwhile, market traders and residents have called on Governor Douye Diri’s administration to intensify efforts to combat insecurity in the state. Many are also advocating for increased security presence in public areas to prevent further bloodshed and restore safety to the community.
