Nigerian singer Asake has been at the center of the storm on social media amidst allegations that his father, Mr. Odunsi Fatai, is sick and in need of the assistance of the general public. A viral video, initially uploaded by Gistlover, showed an elderly man claiming to be Asake’s father paralyzed and crying out for help.
The video quickly sparked conversations about the type of relationship Asake has with his father, with many questioning whether the artiste has abandoned him. While a section of social media users accused Mr. Fatai of being an absentee father, his supporters insisted he played an important role in Asake’s life.
One Segun Ben-Ajayi offered information voluntarily to set things straight, stating that Mr. Fatai single-handedly brought up Asake from the age of three after his mother deserted him. Mr. Odunsi Fatai was not an absentee father. Far from it. He single-handedly raised Asake from age three when his mother deserted him.
He worked at the LG council on the Island, and he was well known and respected by many. He even sold his car in order to send Asake to Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU),” Ben-Ajayi alleged.
He also pointed out the irony that Asake now embraces his mother—who allegedly abandoned him as a child—he has seemingly disowned the father who sacrificed all for him.
“This is bigger than social media beef—it’s a humanity call. Well-meaning Nigerians, let us please rally round Mr. Odunsi Fatai. Let us not allow the sacrifices of a father to be in vain,” he pleaded.
The saga has sparked a firestorm of reactions among Nigerians, with many expressing their disappointment in the singer.
- @Ogunlade L Ebunoluwa: “Asake will be judged by posterity. I have read from people who knew him earlier, how his father was a pillar behind him. If the man were a deadbeat—a position all evidence points was not the case—I would help him if I were Asake.”
- @Casmir Ejike Okoli: “Asake should know better by now. I understand that mothers sometimes manipulate children, but if he does not act fast, karma will catch up with him.”
- @Abayomi David-Ola Asaolu: “Yesterday, everyone was in a hurry to tag the father absent, but now the truth is out and they are silent regarding the mother who actually abandoned him.”
- @Nkem Nwachukwu: “This can inhibit his growth in life. When things start going wrong, he will blame others instead of embracing the fact that he caused it himself.”
- @Fikasco MamaBeloved: “This is beyond sense—there’s something spiritual going on. It looks like the mother has manipulated him, and it’s pitiful to see.”
