Sir Mike Okiro Appeals for Peaceful Solution to Rivers State Crisis

A former Inspector General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro, has urged restraint, respect for human rights, and peaceful dialogue between all concerned parties in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.

In a statement read out on Wednesday in a media briefing, Okiro complained of the politicking unrest affecting the state almost for two years. He also called on all the groups to drop their weapons and embrace concord for peace.

It is critical that we prioritize unity, dialogue, and respect for human rights in order to escape this crisis,” Okiro added. “The people of Rivers State are entitled to peace, and it can only be achieved through constructive engagement and not violence.”.

Referring to his previous experience facilitating peace under the 2009 Niger Delta amnesty scheme that put an end to decades of militancy there, Okiro underscored the importance of collaboration in establishing normalcy.

“Two weeks ago, I was preparing to establish a committee of elders and stakeholders in Rivers State to break this political logjam,” he revealed.

Reiterating his dedication to advancing peace, the former police chief vowed to collaborate with other stakeholders to obtain a lasting solution.

He also urged political actors to follow President Bola Tinubu’s directive and prioritize solutions geared towards ensuring the well-being of Rivers citizens.

This is not the time for politicking but a time of collective responsibility. Rivers State’s security and progress should be our concern,” he further stated.

LEADERSHIP recalls that President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday, 18th March 2023, declared a state of emergency in Rivers State because of mounting political and security crises that have stifled governance and threatened democratic institutions.
